Trier: an old, young city

The guest in Trier may appear already beforehand to it: the town is an adventure playground for commuters between the times. No German city connects history and present more narrowly, more competently, more clearly and einfühlsamer than Trier. With his monuments, scenes and buildings Trier is one single living, living document for the fusion of past and present.

Marktplatz in Trier

Besides, the walk by Trier is a time trip not only in Roman past, but in the whole history tramped since that time. And the town does everything to provide the feeling for the visitor out of this, to be present very near and authentically. The role of the town as a mediator between the centuries has changed into a role as a key to cultural variety. If Trier was formerly the second ROM (Roma secunda), it is today a center of a 4-lands-region in which cultural width and spatial nearness meet.

The river valleys of the Moselle, the Saar, Ruwer and Crossly meet all around Trier. They complement with her Rebflächen and wine terraces not only the wooded environs of Eifel and Hunsrück, but quite ideally also the very lively townscape from history and modern age. The visitor must decide himself; he cannot avoid this liveliness. But he can position himself to her - and is capable of himself still any time and everywhere in green arrangements and parks or in the historical monuments as oases of the rest move back.

Porta-NigraIn Trier charm, warmth, exuberance and friendliness in an especially engaging way meet. Here the promenade invites for walking, the avenue to the walking and the monument to the thoughtfulness and of course the wine was generated not to the wine, but to push open the gates to the cheerfulness. Catering trade and host do everything to bring home the town and her openness to the visitors from all parts of the world.

Besides, the student Jung's people complement the colored origin of the visitors. Where so much positive variety rules, boredom cannot arise. As an Unesco-world cultural asset Trier has got to remain as a modern open-air museum of the antiquity young, dynamically and actively. This symbiosis goes so far that artists for her appearance the great possibilities of Trier - as for example the basilica - in all her uniqueness select quite consciously as a platform for as great events. Trier is engaging, and the homely Moselle feeling which provides the town in some quarter does to the visitor clearly: Trier is a town for young and old, for summer and winter, for antiquity and modern age. With many faces of a town years of age in 2000 Trier is a reflection of those which have stamped the town: Roman emperors just as diligent citizens, electors just as bishops.

They have done here history and have sorted, besides, her heir probably and partly astonishingly well-preserved leave. These are these legacies which have done a town full charm in the most western corner of our land - the joy to all his visitor in the course of the last centuries from Trier.

On the Moselle shore, directly to emperor Wilhelm-Brücke situated, one finds a small, enchanting mile: Zurlauben. Where in the 18-th century the Moselle fishermen were resident, a living, attractive part of town with unmistakeable historical ambience presents itself to the visitor today.

Whether restaurants with a high degree in cookery, creativity and quality, good-middle-class kitchen, fremdländische food from Asia or Latin America: No wish stays open! During the day one meets to beer, wine or a refreshing Porz Viez - to the confidential national drink of the Trierer - on one of the numerous free terraces.

In the evening earthy bars, brewery tubes and wine taverns invite for staying till the early morning hours. Also as a starting point for excursions and walks Zurlauben is simply ideal. Directly on the Moselle shore the landing stages of the holiday boats are found, a walk in the Moselle promenade promises a marvelous view of the Marien's column and the white house wood precipitously lying about the town.

Zurlauben is not only must for every visitor of the town, but still also an authority for the inhabitants of the oldest town of Germany. Who wants to get to know not only land, but also people, the Trierer can convince itself here of the special warmth.
