The old local core has developed in a Nebental of the Ruwer. In the valley the Ruwer flows by a meadow reason in itself the mill line up. On both sides of the Nebentalmündung vineyards climb partly precipitously uphill and surround the village to the north, while the south slope is limited by wood. In the west the wooded Green mountain rises as a landmark of the lower Ruwertals. Thus village Mertes is surrounded by different forms of an attractive middle mountainous region which provides a certain form of security for the inhabitants.
Off industry and traffic noise and without through road one enjoys rest and clean air. Therefore, for many years village Mertes is " an approved resort ". The attractive scenery is opened by attractive round footpaths which lead alternatively by vineyards or by wood. Village Mertes owns a big sports center (Ruwertalhalle) and outdoor swimming pool.
Village Mertes can take up a rare fame for itself. Already at the Roman time the area has found around our place in a piece of world literature entrance. In famous 483 verses to comprehensive poem "Mosella" poet Ausonius has described the Moselle and her tributaries. From the Ruwer he calls a technical specific feature: the marble saws which have cut marble blocks to marble slabs. These were used with the majority constructions of the imperial city Trier as floor coverings and wall disguising.

Thus presents itself in village Mertes, high on top in the vineyard a regional attraction. From here a splendid panorama not only on the famous Mertesdorfer vineyard positions, but also the Ruwertal comes up upward to the timber forest heights and down in the Moselle valley and to the heights lying behind it of the Meulenwaldes.
