The romantic Ruwer valley
Valleys and hills of particular charm

The Ruwer river reached a level of popularity within the last decades, you wouldn't believe. The reason for that is not
only the fact that the wine growing district's appellation "Mosel-Saar-Ruwer" is well known all over the world.
Another reason certainly is, what the Ruwer valley itself has to offer.

The discussion among the winegrowers of the region is still going on, wether the appellation "Mosel-Saar-Ruwer" should change just to "Mosel" or not. However, the Ruwer-winegrowers already set a sign for an easier identification of their product: More and more winemakers label their bottles with the certificate "Winzer im Weinkontor - Zeugnis des Ruwerweinbaues“.

Approximately 10 km length of Ruwer valley, approximately 300 hectares area under wine cultivation, approximately 3 million bottles of Ruwer-wine - small amounts in global comparison. Nevertheless, for good reasons one is proud of the Ruwer valley and its wines. First of all there are quite a few scenic wine villages along the visitor's tour. Usually you will start your tour at the Trier township Ruwer, following the small river's right bank (in flow direction it will be the left riverbank!). Sometimes you may or you have to cross the river.

It will be a winding route passing by charming places: e. g. Waldrach, the largest village in the valley, Mertesdorf the oldest one and Kasel the most common wine village. They are surrounded by the villages Trier-Eitelsbach, Sommerau, Trier-Ruwer and Riveris. The Roman poet Ausonius mentioned the valley in his poem "Mosella" from AD 371 as a romantic one. Nothing of this estimation changed since then. This beauty spot presents itself surrounded by cliffy vineyards and varied mixed forests - beeches, oaks, larches, firs also chestnut and walnut trees - expanding down to the river. Here you will enjoy your holidays, perhaps hiking and reliving a more than 2.000 year old history - or just having a superb glass of wine.

If you decide to hike through the beautiful Ruwer valley, you also should discover the scenic side valleys, leading up to the highs of Osburger high forest. The Hohe Wurzel is 645 m above sea level and the Rösterkopf where the Ruwer spring is located has a hight of 708 m above sea level. Nearly unique are the clear views across narrow valleys, the wide Moselle valley and the mountains of Eifel or Hunsrück. There are hundreds of kilometers of splendidly constructed hiking trails or agricultural lanes, providing refuges and benches to rest.

Palatal highlights from the region will be served in old-established hotels and inns. But don't ask for sweet wine. Ruwer wine is a dry one, but rich in bouquet.
