Romans, palaces, parks and winedeutsch
Holidays at the Moselle border triangle vis-á-vis the Luxembourg wine route.

Roman mansions and noble juice of the grape

It's really true, we have to be grateful to the Romans, which have been here for 500 years. Even the famous poem "Mosella", a canticle to the river, its banks and inhabitants was written by Devimus Magnus Ausonius, who was the Roman Emperor Constantine's sons teacher 1600 years ago.römisches Mosaik

This ancient poem is the poetical description of a cruise across the Moselle down to the river Rhine. Things have changed since then. But tourists going on excursion on board of one of those white coloured Moselle steamships are still excited like the poet Ausonius was AD 400. You will find numerous cultural evidence of Roman's past. Outstanding the Roman mosaic of Nennig, largest and best conserved mosaic-floor north the Alps, the Roman theater at Dahlheim/Luxembourg or the Roman mansion at Borg, an estate with manor-house, bath and several outbuildings reconstructed on a grand scale and beautiful gardens.
Much younger are the romantic palaces along the banks of Moselle. They were built about 1000 years later.

In the region of Schengen European history was written over the centuries. Wars ravaged the Moselle region, border area between France, Luxembourg and Germany.
Only the Schengen Convention let the borders disappear. The border triangle became an experience triangle.

WeinköniginTo get here, you should leave the "convenient" motorway. Not using the regional country roads, you will miss e. g. one of Germany's most beautiful landscapes: The loop of Saar river at Orscholz or in France the medieval small town Rodemack - also known as the "Carcassonne of the North". Looking for the short, fast way you will miss out castles, palaces, villages and landscapes you won't find anywhere else.

How do people live here? Everybody knows: Where wine is grown, the people are not children of unhappiness! All over the Moselle region wine is cultivated. Todays best reputation of Schengen-wine is based on the favourable climate, the sun, the soil and - of course - the winemakers.

Vine dressers open their cellars to visitors during the "Saarland Wine Summer" from May till October, as same as at the Luxembourgian bank of Moselle, called the "Letzebuerger Waistrooss". To visit the wine & folklore museum at Bech-Kleinmacher is a must for connoisseurs of wine.

Moselle steamships, palaces, gardens an culinary indulgence.

At the Luxembourgian Remich you should board one of the nice ships.
Schlossgarten While you are enjoying the comfort on board you a beautiful landscape is passing by: Castle Thorn and Castle Berg with its extravagant casino as well as the impressive battlement of Sierck-les-Bains or the old tower of Schengen castle, which already inspired Victor Hugo. The mighty castle complex of Malbrouck at Mandern/France, restored extensively, allows a scenic view over the Moselle valley. These are only a few out of a lot of historical buildings.

"Gardens of Eden - borderless" is the floristic welcome at the "Schengen Corner". Newly constructed baroque gardens at the park at Perl and Schengen castle, latter including a separate herbage garden, or the Renaissance garden at castle Berg/Nennig as well as the Roman gardens at Borg invite you for a charming trip, which can be extended to further eight "Gardens of Eden".

Park NennigAre you curious now about the "Schengener Eck", the "Schengen triangle" in the heart of Europe? Then you should put a visit on your wish list - do it just spontaneously!
