Nittel Mosel and the Eberthälchen
The wine place Nittel lies picturesquely between high rock Dolomit and limestone rock and the sinuous river run of the Obermosel. His Mediterranean plants and small animal world testifies from a warm Schonklima which affects especially for a good price the wine-growing. Even orchids prosper in two nature reserves.
The districts Rehlingen and Köllig belong to municipality Nittel with her 2000 inhabitants. Rehlingen lies in a brook valley with nice look over the Moselle. Köllig distinguishes itself by his well-preserved old courts. Directly on the other Moselle side the Grand Duchy begins Luxembourg. To France these are only 25 kms.
The probably oldest Rebsorte on the Moselle is the Elbling. In Nittel, with 290 ha Rebfläche the biggest wine-growing municipality in the Obermosel, he encloses about 75% of the cultivation surface and is stamping therefore for the region.
The local lime ground gives him a quite special taste mark. Vividly, rassig, stimulatingly, refreshing and easily bekömmlich is this dry white wine which is also suited very well for the refining to champagne. Here beside the Elbling Burgundians mature to demanding wines. Auxerrois, white Burgundian and gray Burgundian prosper very well on the lime ground of the Obermosel which applies up to the French central massif.
