Wintrich Mittelmosel: Where fish stairs rise and lead ways to the man's God
Wintrich is a municipality with one about millennial, documented history. Besides, the findings from Roman and prechristian time prove that the settlement is much older than the documents which mention the place for the first time in a document.
Today about 140 winegrower families manage those 270 ha Rebfläche, first plantation obviously between I. and V. Century through the Romans occurred. The name Vindriacum from which has developed Wintrich is even older; he comes from the prechristian Celts. The intensive removal of the wine culture occurred, in the end, in the Middle Ages under the direction of the Trier broads electors. Today the wine-growing forms the main source of income of the Wintricher - and because one can surround him with so much hospitality, romanticism and provable history, the tourism has become the second pivot leg.
One feels linked to the guests and visitors who select not least Wintrich, therefore, as a holiday place because no industry disturbs the rest. Wintrich disposes beside wine and history of attractions which make the place for a vacation especially engaging. Thus the tradition of the passion play was taken up during the last years again which had fallen asleep after the first performance in 1902 in the fifties a little. Besides, it concerns a performance of the suffering history of Christ which reminds of the Oberammergauer passion plays. And not only this. Wintrich leads annually the song play„ From the shoot to the wine“ on which shows the wine-growing also for the visitor entertaining. The choir of the Wintricher man God sparrows has attained, in the meantime, big fame. And Wintrich disposes not least of an observatory for amateur astronomers with whose equipment a sky lets manage to grab which comes sometimes to the Wintricher big man's God quite near...
From the Moselle to the moon
The look at lunar mountains and solar protuberances is
also possible from the Moselle: the people's observatory Wintrich offers
the look in other worlds with her reflecting telescope (203 mms). If weather
and season is right, not only the rings of the Saturn and the satellites
of the Jupiter are to be seen for a long time. In the Wintricher unmanned

Passion plays in Wintrich on the Moselle
The tradition which does headlines?
Upper bunting region
allows to greet? Probably not. The chronicle of the Wintricher passion plays
has her own history, and it stands shortly before her 100.ten birthday. Since
already in 1902 the first passion plays were produced in Wintrich in an easy
form by pastor Wrede at that time. It was a kind of own contribution of the
citizens which served the fill-up of the empty cashes for a renovation of
the parish church.
The play was successful - and from the easy play of 1902 became in the second play year - in 1927 - a considerably more extravagantly formed festivity. The performances thought a so big interest that one decided a 5-annual cycle for the performances. And thus the " Wintricher of passion " was performed subsequently really - up to the year of war in 1942 - continuously till 1952.
The name„ Wintricher passion“ had originated because a Wintricher citizen called Georg Holl the original text of the passion which had presumably originated before the turn of the century and had disappeared just as his author, unfortunately reworked and around the passages„ Move“ and„ Resurrection“ complemented.
And something else can be found out no more because the suitable contemporary witnesses are absent: why occurred after 1952 no performance more? When in the 80s by the Wintricher theatrical play group the idea of the performance was animated, one found out that there were apparently also no more text versions of 1952 any more. Luckily some former players were able to report whole text passages by heart, so that from it a tape recording was provided for copying.
The history would not be complete, if one did not mention the real "miracle". Some of the 1952nd players found, in the end, nevertheless, a text version, they compared to the new version taped in the meantime and ascertained absolute equality!
Now the most difficult, but the nicest part of the work began. In 1995 a new association which could count from the first day on the vigorous support of 95 members was founded. The finding of old costumes and scenery pictures let the enthusiasm and the interest grow further - and, in the end, there were in 1997 full 13 sold off performances! In the meantime, are directed of all eyes on the 100-year-old jubilee cycle with whose tests is already begun in 2001. Completely Wintrich is of full tension and expectation!
The unique success gave the stimulus to produce the passion plays in the jubilee year 2002 even more impressively and to let experience the viewers the suffering way rich in conflict of the Son of God very closely.
Now all 5 years of passion plays take place again. The next performances take place in 2017!
